Exploiting New Worlds: Cautionary Tales of Yankee Traders and Star Trek's Ferengi

Star Trek’s Ferengi first appeared in 1987 with the “The Last Outpost” (Season 1, Episode 5) of Star Trek: The Next Generation where the Ferengi were directly compared to “the ocean-going Yankee traders of eighteenth and nineteenth century America.” Although different iterations of the Ferengi followed, they have never strayed from their comparison with the Yankee Traders of real-life history. Yet, what are the essential similarities and differences between them? And what does the comparison teach us about who we are as a species and the dangers of unbridled capitalism?

Presented by Joel Welch: lawyer and PHD candidate at Western's faculty of law.

404s Improv Comedy (Show #1)

When you get a 404 error on the internet, it means that the website, or the computer script that represents it, is nowhere to be found. Improv is performing without a script: the actor’s 404. That’s us. Yep, we’re that geeky.

The 404s are a touring group of improv performers based in the Canadian cities of Calgary, Edmonton, and Toronto. With our unique “geekprov” brand of improv comedy, we have been entertaining audiences all around Canada and the United States. Incorporating our wit, charm, pop culture knowledge, and a great deal of audience participation, The 404s make sure every show is memorable, interactive, and hilarious.
